Getting Started Guide

Step-by-Step: Building Your First Collection

  1. Register and Verify: Create your free account using your email address. Check your inbox for the verification email and click the confirmation link to activate your account. This step ensures account security and prevents spam.
  2. Login to Your Dashboard: Once verified, log in to access your personal dashboard. You'll see tabs for Movies, TV Shows, Anime, Video Games, and Statistics. Each tab is fully customizable - hide tabs you don't use in your account settings.
  3. Add Your First Entry: Click on any tab (e.g., Movies) and expand the "Add Movie" form. Enter the movie title and year. OmniTrackr will automatically search for the official title and fetch the poster from OMDB API. Add a rating (0-10.0), mark if you've watched it, and optionally write a review.
  4. Organize Your Collection: Use the search bar to filter by title, director, or genres. Sort by rating, year, or other criteria. Edit entries inline by clicking the edit button, or delete items you no longer want to track.
  5. Explore Statistics: Visit the Statistics tab to see comprehensive analytics about your collection. View your watch progress, rating distributions, favorite directors, decade breakdowns, and genre preferences. All statistics update in real-time as you add more items.
  6. Connect with Friends: Use the Friends sidebar to send friend requests by username. Accept incoming requests through the notification bell. View friends' collections and statistics (respecting their privacy settings) to discover new media recommendations.
  7. Backup Your Data: Regularly export your collection using the "Export Data" button. This creates a JSON file with all your movies, TV shows, anime, and video games. You can import this file later or use it to migrate to another account.

Understanding Title Normalization

OmniTrackr automatically normalizes titles to their official names when fetching metadata from APIs. This ensures consistency and accuracy in your collection. For example:

  • Entering "skyrim" becomes "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" (RAWG API)
  • Entering "inception" becomes "Inception" (OMDB API)
  • Entering "naruto" becomes "Naruto" with proper formatting (Jikan API)

This normalization only occurs when metadata is successfully fetched. If an API doesn't return results, your original title is preserved. This feature helps maintain a professional, organized collection with consistent naming conventions.

Making the Most of Your Statistics

The Statistics dashboard provides powerful insights into your media consumption habits:

  • Watch Progress: Track how many items you've completed versus your total collection size. The visual progress bar shows your completion percentage at a glance.
  • Rating Analysis: See your average rating across all rated items and view rating distributions. Discover your highest and lowest rated media to understand your preferences.
  • Year Analysis: Explore which decades you watch most. The decade breakdown bar chart visualizes your viewing habits across different eras of cinema and television.
  • Director Insights: For movies, see which directors appear most frequently in your collection and which directors you rate highest on average. Discover your favorite filmmakers.
  • Genre Statistics: For video games, analyze which genres you play most and identify your gaming preferences through comprehensive genre breakdowns.

Tips & Best Practices

📝 Organizing Your Collection

Start by adding items you've already watched or played to build a solid foundation. Then, add items to your watchlist by leaving the "Watched" checkbox unchecked. Use the search and sort features to quickly find specific items or organize by rating, year, or director.

Write brief reviews as you add items - even a sentence or two helps you remember why you rated something the way you did months later. Reviews are searchable, so you can find items by keywords in your reviews.

⭐ Rating Consistency

Develop a consistent rating system that works for you. Many users find it helpful to use a scale where 5.0 is average, 7.0+ is good, 8.5+ is great, and 9.5+ is exceptional. Use decimal ratings (e.g., 7.5, 8.2) to capture nuanced opinions.

Your statistics dashboard will show rating distributions, helping you understand if you tend to rate items high or low. This self-awareness can help you maintain consistency over time.

👥 Social Features

Use the friends system to discover new media through recommendations. When viewing a friend's collection, use the search functionality to find specific items or filter by rating to see their highest-rated content.

Respect privacy settings - if a friend has made certain data private, that's their choice. Use privacy settings yourself to control what friends can see about your collection and statistics.

💾 Data Management

Regularly export your collection as a backup. JSON export files include all metadata: titles, ratings, reviews, watched status, poster URLs, and more. Keep these backups safe - they're your insurance against data loss.

When importing data, OmniTrackr's smart conflict resolution updates existing entries rather than creating duplicates. This makes it safe to import the same file multiple times or merge collections from different accounts.

🔒 Privacy & Security

Take advantage of granular privacy controls. You can make movies, TV shows, anime, video games, or statistics private individually. Private data is completely hidden from friends, giving you full control over what you share.

Keep your account secure by using a strong, unique password. Enable email verification and use the password reset feature if you forget your password. All sensitive operations require password confirmation for added security.

📊 Using Statistics Effectively

Check your statistics regularly to understand your viewing patterns. Are you watching mostly recent releases or exploring older classics? Which directors do you rate highest? Use these insights to discover new content that matches your preferences.

The statistics dashboard updates in real-time as you add items. Watch your completion percentage grow as you mark items as watched, and see your average rating evolve as you rate more content.
