Stay with the strange
Three small steps through a month of quiet ghosts, unexplained signals and stories that refuse to resolve.
Take the challenge ↓October tends to arrive with a checklist: the horror marathon, the scariest-ever list, the film everyone says you must see before Halloween. This challenge asks for something gentler. It shares an idea with this month's Discover edition: a story can unsettle you without explaining itself, and the strangeness that stays with you longest is often the low-key kind.
There are three steps. None of them requires you to watch anything frightening, and none of them depends on a particular streaming service. You can finish the whole thing with one film, one album and a sentence you write afterwards, or you can spread it across a book, a game and a long weekend of television. Anything you mark finished in October counts, including things you finished before you joined.
STEP 1
Finish one pick from the October edition
The October edition picks six works across six formats, from David Lowery's A Ghost Story (one quiet evening) to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House (a short novel best read slowly). Choose by the time you have, not by reputation. If you have already finished one of them this month, this step is done.
STEP 2
Finish titles in two different formats
Pair your pick with something in another medium: a film and an album, a book and an anime episode arc, a game and a season of television. Moving between formats is the fastest way to notice what each one does well. Mushi-Shi's self-contained episodes, for example, sit beside Ghosteen's long, unbroken songs in a way that makes both feel slower and stranger.
STEP 3
Rate it or jot a takeaway
When you mark something finished, OmniTrackr offers a rating and a one-line takeaway. Use either once this month. A takeaway does not need to be clever. "I kept thinking about the house after I closed the book" will tell you more next year than a star count, and it stays private unless you choose to publish a review.
The six picks that count for step one
Choose by how much uncertainty you can take tonight. A Ghost Story is the stillest, and takes one sitting. Midnight Mass is the longest and most intense. Mushi-Shi comes one self-contained episode at a time. In OXENFREE you work through a mystery by talking. Ghosteen wants one uninterrupted listen, and The Haunting of Hill House is the sharpest study of a mind and a place growing hard to tell apart.

How progress counts
A title counts when you mark it finished in your library during the calendar month (UTC), whether you finish it on the first day or the last, and whether you joined before or after. Each title counts once, even if you log it twice. Ratings and takeaways come from the finish screen or your activity journal.
There are no streaks, no leaderboards and nothing to lose if you skip a month. Leaving a challenge removes it from your dashboard without touching your library, and a new challenge starts on the first of each month.
Something to think about
When a story leaves something unresolved, notice whether you lean in or reach for an explanation. Neither is wrong, and knowing which one you are this month makes your next pick easier.
