Dune in order
Frank Herbert's six Dune novels, Denis Villeneuve's films, David Lynch's version and Dune: Prophecy, in reading order, release order and where to start.
Frank Herbert's Dune is often called the best-selling science-fiction novel ever written, and it was the first of six. Each sequel jumps further ahead and gets stranger, until the last two books are set thousands of years after the first. Meanwhile three screen versions have tackled the first two books, and a series has gone ten thousand years into the past.
This guide covers Herbert's six novels and the main screen versions. The prequels and sequels written later by his son Brian Herbert with Kevin J. Anderson are a separate project, covered in the questions at the end.

Book · 1965 · Frank Herbert
Dune
Read, watch, keep reading: #1 · Release order: #1
A noble family takes charge of a desert planet that holds the most valuable substance in the universe, and its heir becomes something more dangerous than a hero. The opening chapters are dense; the appendices and glossary help.
Movie · 2021 · Denis Villeneuve
Dune: Part One
Read, watch, keep reading: #2 · Release order: #8 · Screen only, in story order: #2
Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the first half of the novel, released simply as Dune. It ends mid-story, on purpose.
Movie · 2024 · Denis Villeneuve
Dune: Part Two
Read, watch, keep reading: #3 · Release order: #9 · Screen only, in story order: #3
The second half of the novel, with Paul among the Fremen. Changes Chani's role to make the book's warning about messiahs unmistakable.
Book · 1969 · Frank Herbert
Dune Messiah
Read, watch, keep reading: #4 · Release order: #2
Twelve years later, and short. It deliberately takes apart the triumph of the first book, and it is the basis for Villeneuve's third film.
Book · 1976 · Frank Herbert
Children of Dune
Read, watch, keep reading: #5 · Release order: #3
Paul's twin children inherit his empire and his visions. The end of the first arc.
Book · 1981 · Frank Herbert
God Emperor of DuneOptional
Read, watch, keep reading: #6 · Release order: #4
Thirty-five centuries later, a single ruler has held the universe still for its own good. Mostly conversations, and one of the strangest books in science fiction.
Book · 1984 · Frank Herbert
Heretics of DuneOptional
Read, watch, keep reading: #7 · Release order: #5
Fifteen hundred years after God Emperor, a nearly new cast and a scattered humanity coming home.
Book · 1985 · Frank Herbert
Chapterhouse: DuneOptional
Read, watch, keep reading: #8 · Release order: #7
Herbert's final Dune novel, left on a cliffhanger by his death the following year.
Movie · 1984 · David Lynch
DuneOptional
Read, watch, keep reading: #9 · Release order: #6
David Lynch's version squeezes the whole first book into one film. Baffling as an adaptation, unforgettable as a piece of design.
TV show · 2024
Dune: ProphecyOptional
Read, watch, keep reading: #10 · Release order: #10 · Screen only, in story order: #1
The founding of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, ten thousand years before Paul. Loosely based on the later prequel novels.
Where to start
Watch Dune: Part One if you want the fastest way in, then read the novel to fill in the inner lives the films leave out. If you read first, push through the first hundred pages; the book opens up once the family arrives on Arrakis.
Most readers who stop after the first three books are happy. God Emperor and beyond are for people who want to see where Herbert's ideas went.
Whichever way you go in, keep the appendices in mind. Herbert's glossary and his notes on the ecology, religion and great houses of the Imperium are part of the novel, and a quick look at them makes the opening chapters much less daunting. The 2021 film does something similar on screen, so you learn the world through Paul's training instead of through long explanations.
Questions
Do I need to read the books to follow the films?
No. Villeneuve's films are complete on their own, though the novel explains the politics and religions in far more depth.
What about the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson books?
They are prequels and sequels written from Frank Herbert's notes after his death, starting in 1999. Opinions vary widely; read Frank Herbert's six first.
Which Dune film should I watch?
Villeneuve's two films for the story. Lynch's 1984 film is worth seeing afterwards as a cult curiosity.
Will there be a third Villeneuve film?
Villeneuve's next Dune film adapts Dune Messiah. Read the novel first if you want to know where the story is going; it is the shortest book in the series.
How we chose
Prepared by OmniTrackr and reviewed by the site owner before publishing. We listed the entries most people mean by "Dune", checked release years and story placement against public sources, and marked as optional the side stories that are not needed to follow the main story. The recommended order is editorial opinion: it is the order we would hand a friend starting from nothing.
Release years are for the first release in the original language. Running times, editions and availability vary by region. Links go to OmniTrackr title pages, not shops. Your progress is worked out from your own library each time you open the page; nothing about it is shared.
