Harry Potter in order

The seven Harry Potter books and eight films, read-then-watch, in release order and in story order with Fantastic Beasts and Hogwarts Legacy.

The Harry Potter books are a rare series where publication order and story order are the same: one book per school year, from Harry's first letter to the Battle of Hogwarts. The films follow them closely. The questions come from everything added since, from the Fantastic Beasts prequels to a stage play and a video game set a century earlier.

Our recommended order alternates the books and films, so you read each story before you see it on screen. You also notice exactly what each film had to cut.

Book · 1998 · J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Read each book, then watch its film: #3 · Release order: #2

Students are being petrified and an old diary holds the answer. It also introduces an object that turns out to be central to book six.

Movie · 2002 · Chris Columbus

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Read each book, then watch its film: #4 · Release order: #6 · Story order on screen: #6

The longest of the early films and the closest to its book.

Book · 1999 · J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Read each book, then watch its film: #5 · Release order: #3

An escaped prisoner is said to be hunting Harry. The first book without Voldemort at its center, and a favorite of many readers.

Movie · 2004 · Alfonso Cuarón

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Read each book, then watch its film: #6 · Release order: #8 · Story order on screen: #7

Alfonso Cuarón changed the look and mood of the series, and it is often called the best of the eight films.

Book · 2000 · J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Read each book, then watch its film: #7 · Release order: #4

The Triwizard Tournament, and the turn from school story to war story. Twice the length of the books before it.

Movie · 2005 · Mike Newell

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Read each book, then watch its film: #8 · Release order: #10 · Story order on screen: #8

Cuts heavily to fit the tournament into one film, but nails the graveyard scene.

Book · 2003 · J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Read each book, then watch its film: #9 · Release order: #7

Nobody believes Harry, and the Ministry takes over Hogwarts. The longest book, with an angry, isolated Harry at its heart.

Movie · 2007 · David Yates

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Read each book, then watch its film: #10 · Release order: #11 · Story order on screen: #9

David Yates's first film; he directed every Wizarding World film after it. The shortest film from the longest book.

Book · 2005 · J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Read each book, then watch its film: #11 · Release order: #9

Dumbledore shows Harry Voldemort's past. Much of the book is memory, and those chapters are the key to the ending.

Movie · 2009 · David Yates

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Read each book, then watch its film: #12 · Release order: #13 · Story order on screen: #10

Beautifully shot and funnier than you might expect. It skips much of the backstory the book spends most of its time on.

Book · 2007 · J.K. Rowling

Read each book, then watch its film: #13 · Release order: #12

Harry, Ron and Hermione leave Hogwarts to hunt for Horcruxes. The conclusion of the series.

The Battle of Hogwarts and the end of the saga on screen.

Book · 2016 · J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Cursed ChildOptional

Read each book, then watch its film: #16 · Release order: #16 · Story order on screen: #13

The script of the stage play, written by Jack Thorne from a story with Rowling and John Tiffany, set nineteen years after the final book. It reads oddly as a script; it is better seen on stage.

Movie · 2016 · David Yates

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemOptional

Release order: #17 · Story order on screen: #2

Newt Scamander in 1926 New York, seventy years before Harry. The most fun of the prequel films.

Movie · 2018 · David Yates

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of GrindelwaldOptional

Release order: #18 · Story order on screen: #3

Young Dumbledore and the rise of Grindelwald. Dense with lore and revelations that the next film largely sets aside.

Movie · 2022 · David Yates

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of DumbledoreOptional

Release order: #19 · Story order on screen: #4

The last Fantastic Beasts film so far, and a close to Dumbledore and Grindelwald's story.

Video game · 2023

Hogwarts LegacyOptional

Release order: #20 · Story order on screen: #1

An open-world game set at Hogwarts in the 1890s, with a new student and no characters from the books. The castle is the star.

Where to start

Start with the first book or the first film; both work, and the series grows up with you either way. If you are reading aloud to children, the first three books suit younger listeners and the later ones get darker.

Leave the Fantastic Beasts films until after the main eight. They assume you know the world, and their best moments are callbacks.

Questions

Philosopher's Stone or Sorcerer's Stone?

The same story. The UK and most of the world use Philosopher's Stone; US editions and the US release of the film use Sorcerer's Stone. OmniTrackr counts either title.

Where does Fantastic Beasts fit?

About seventy years before Harry starts at Hogwarts. It can be watched before or after the main films, but it makes more sense after.

Is Hogwarts Legacy part of the story?

It is set in the same world in the 1890s, with new characters. Nothing in it is needed for the books or films.

How we chose

Prepared by OmniTrackr and reviewed by the site owner before publishing. We listed the entries most people mean by "Harry Potter", checked release years and story placement against public sources, and marked as optional the side stories that are not needed to follow the main story. The recommended order is editorial opinion: it is the order we would hand a friend starting from nothing.

Release years are for the first release in the original language. Running times, editions and availability vary by region. Links go to OmniTrackr title pages, not shops. Your progress is worked out from your own library each time you open the page; nothing about it is shared.
