Hayao Miyazaki made this for the ten-year-old daughters of his friends, and it treats a child's growing up with total seriousness. The bathhouse is packed with small, strange details that reward a second viewing, and the quiet train ride across the flooded sea is one of the most admired scenes in animation. If you have only seen it dubbed, try the subtitled version too.
